Sunday 25th September

I met Doreenda and Amanda for lunch today and then we went to the Zoo market (it’s across the road from Beijing zoo), none of us had Beijing zoo written in Chinese to show the taxi driver though so we were miming to the taxi driver elephants and lions trying to get him to understand zoo, I bet he thought we were idiots! it was an hour in the taxi (it was 30 degrees, too hot for the subway) and as we got there there was a woman selling puppies out of a carrier bag which was quite sad to see.

The market was not very good as no one would barter with us so we left and went to the silk market which was much better. Amanda is really bad at bartering though and we had to keep intervening, I used a phrase from my Mandarin lessons which I had learnt specially, pronounced “tai qwey lah” which means too expensive! I bought a pair of black Ugg boots for 190 RMB (£19) as in the winter it’s supposed to get to minus 20 degrees (I have no idea how I am going to cope with that!) I also bought a necklace and some postcards (the only time I have ever seen postcards, nowhere seems to sell them).

After the market we went to Pinnacle Plaza for dinner and then went home to prepare for the weeks lessons.
